Wow! May’s Pop-Up was POPPIN’! Our Community Outreach is paying off, the word has spread! Sometimes it takes a few months for the word to get around about a repeating event. That is exactly what happened this month, we had our best participation yet! This month we debuted two new locations on the boardwalk. We now have eight business partners!

We started things off at Kula Urban Farm where artist, Tracy Coon, taught “Eco Printmaking” using natural and found materials to help participants create one-of-a-kind art or a custom patch.

At Over the Moon Art Studios, teens enjoyed “Flower Pot Painting”. They painted their own personalized flower pots and added colored paper flowers. The participants could make one to give to their mothers for Mother’s Day!

At one of the new locations on the boardwalk, Asbury Park Art Club, students and their families enjoyed a free “Art à la Carte” experience. Visitors selected their own projects from a menu, making fun, hands-on activities. Some teens made beach glass mosaics, while others made bracelets or decorated picture frames.

Teens looking forward to their upcoming prom participated in a “Prom Ready Hair & Makeup” tutorial by Cameron Hayes at the Asbury Book Cooperative. Cameron is a professional stylist and manager of Iconic Hair Lounge in Eatontown. They were even given a complimentary bag of makeup!

Over at Art629, Brittany hosted her popular “Figure Drawing” workshop. Students learned to do gesture drawing, shading, and proportions of the human figure from a live model. The model started off with one-minute poses. The participants needed to really focus on the pose and quickly get the initial pose down as quickly as they could!

Christine DeMarsico was at Konscious Community Center leading writing workshop called, “Writing for the Soul” which was a reflective writing workshop designed to support youth in connecting with their inner voice through poetry, journaling, and mindful reflection.

At the Art Spot on the boardwalk, Lauren Brennan taught “Hand Sewing 101”. Sewing by hand is the foundation of mending and creating clothing like a professional. Participants, learned the tools of the trade with 5 common stitch methods.

Parlor Gallery registrants for the “Comic Character Design” were treated to an in-depth class taught by professional artist, Sean Pryor. Students learned to create their own characters using anatomy basics, inking, and color theory to bring their unique characters to life!
